Offset Bends, Saddle Bends, and Kicks

To create an offset bend:

  1. Be sure the rising shoe is at the full down position.
  2. Place the conduit to be bent into the traveling shoe and the rising shoe.
  3. Position the pipe in the rising shoe. The length of the pipe that extends beyond the right edge of the rising shoe will be beyond the offset.
  4. Close the rising shoe front abutment over the pipe.
  5. Use the Standard Multiplier to place the red arrow on the traveling shoe to point to the appropriate number of the bending deck.
  6. Determine how far the rising shoe should be raised adding the Springback Formula.
  7. Turn the crank on the machine to raise the rising shoe to the desired height. The traveling shoe will automatically follow and create the second and equal bend.

To create a saddle bend:

  1. Prepare the first offset as instructed in the offset directions.
  2. Instead of removing the pipe from the machine, turn the pipe over 180 degrees, pull the pipe through the rising shoe that you want to be the length of your saddle.
  3. Reposition the traveling shoe and create the second offset to complete the saddle.

To create a kick:

  1. Place the pipe in both shoes but DO NOT close the front abutment.
  2. Raise the front shoe to the desired height of the kick.

Example

To if you wanted to make a 30 degree, 12 inch offset bend, you would implement the Standard Multiplier and Springback Formula as follows:

  1. Use Standard Multiplier to determine position of traveling shoe
    Slide the traveling shoe to 24" as shown on the carriage deck. For a 30 degree bend, the standard multiplier is 2.00 times the desired height. Since the desired height of the bend that you want to make is 12 inches, you would multiply 12 by the standard multiplier to determine the position of the traveling shoe (12 x 2.00 = 24).
  2. Use Springback Formula to calculate the height of rising shoe.
    Turn the crank until the rising shoe rises 13.2". For a 30 degree bend, you need to add 10% to the distance that you raise the rising shoe to compensate for the distance that the conduit pipe "springs back" when the bend is complete. The 13.2" height was calculated by adding 10% to the height of the bend for the spring back (12" + 10% = 13.2").
